Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

People often ask what is reflexology, it is the practice of applying pressure to ones feet or hands on specific points to promote relaxation and to help decongest the body of impurities.

It is a practice that has been around for thousands of years, and evidence has shown it was used in some form as far back as ancient Egyptian times.

Reflexology is based on the belief that the feet and hands act as a map or mirror of the body and as such are a gateway to the body itself.  It takes its name from ‘reflex points’ on the hands and feet that have been linked by many physicians and ancient people to certain areas of the body.

These points are connected to the body’s systems and organs through energy channels, otherwise known as zones or meridians and are essentially the energy pathways through the body.

What are the benefits of Reflexology?

The benefits of reflexology can be felt when the body no longer feels under the strain of day to day living and is therefore not subjected to the physical problems these can bring about.  If a client understands that they have a responsibility in their own well being and that the treatment works hand in hand with the individual, certain ailments can be alleviated and serious  issues related to this can be avoided.

Through the treatment of the client symptoms of stress and tension, headaches and migraine and insomnia for example can be relieved.

Other benefits include symptomatic relief from ailments such as arthritis, musculo-skeletal problems, digestive issues, skin problems and circulatory issues to name but a few, where the treatment can alleviate symptoms and give the individual relief from the pain they may be feeling.

Reflexology can also be beneficial to those trying to conceive, those with fertility issues and ultimately during pregnancy for relaxation.  For more information on this please contact me.

How does it work?

During a reflexology treatment, each foot (or hand if applicable) is worked by applying pressure to the reflex points using the thumb and fingers.  The therapist will work the whole foot through fluid movements, promoting the body to release its own natural energy, disperse blockages and create its own equilibrium.

The objectives of a reflexology treatment are to relax a client and promote well being within them.  It aids relaxation by allowing muscles and the psyche to release the stress that can be felt through daily life, and brings about a calming effect that helps the individual to cope with this.  This relaxed state allows the body to function more effectively by allowing the nervous systems to start reacting correctly.

A reflexology treatment will also help clear any blockages within the body that may be causing issues to the client and having a negative impact on their well being.

Overall reflexology is a holistic treatment that promotes an equilibrium, known as homeostasis, and cares for the body and mind as one, helping an individual cope with any emotional and physical stresses they may be feeling.
